Woo first post!
I like talking about stuff, so it'll be so long =w=
Right, so on topic:
What's my favorite part of the media?
Well, I think it's definitely got to be Far Eastern film and visual media.
I think the first time I was exposed to anything like that was when I watched pokemon as a kid(I was a huge fan when I was three ;w;) XD
After that, I had a few more encounters with it throughout my life, but one I really remember from my childhood are three movies that stood out to me.
The first is Final Fantasy: The Spirits within. It was the first film ever filmed with fully CGI animated actors, and was produced by Square Pictures(a subsidery of what we now know as Square Enix, a Japanese video game producer, and creator of the famed Final Fantasy franchise) and I was amazed at how lifelike the CG renders could be. I found it amazing, and is probably why I love CGI renders in computer animated films and videogames. I often find myself staring at the renders and either freezing and rewinding the TV or stopping whilst playing a game just to admire the scrap of CGI that caught my eye at that moment.
The next encounter that I remember was watching Spirited Away. I remember it because of the sheer beauty of the animation style and how extravagant and surreal the character designs were. I watched it again many years later and found myself awestruck by how beautiful the mise en scene Hayao Miyazaki was able to create with his animations. Since my first time watching Spirited Away, I have also watched other films by Studio Ghibli and various Anime series. I think what makes me so attracted to Anime is how visually stunning the style is. And it's not just your run of the mill "anime-style" one sees floating around the internet or sketched by the the student sitting next to you on a particularly dreary lesson. Or even the cheap, mass produced things they show on TV, which are usually cashcow franchise based Anime that are produced to sell.
It's the really beautiful ones that capture my attention and make me love the whole genre.(click for full sized)
Finally, I remember the first time I watched a Chinese film was when I watched The Promise on a plane journey. I loved the beautiful costumes and the settings. Quite recently, I watched Hero and was so amazed by the fighting sequences. I like action and adventure films but this film gave me a whole different sort of fight scene. No explosions, no guns, not even heavy blood- and the one drop of blood that was shown spilling in the film was the most symbolic thing ever. This film made fighting look beautiful. it emphasized the glory and honour behind the conflict and made the whole sequence seem even spiritual.
This is my favourite fight from it-
(terrible dubbed version, please ignore the horrific lip synching)
And I think from that, I know why I love far eastern visual media so much.
I have so much more to say about it, because every part of it amazes me.
It's beautifully detailed, symbolic and thought provoking. You really have to respect the people who create such amazing master pieces.
And that's that/ My huge entry on my favourite kind of media.
I really have too much to say about it(what can I do? I'm a media geek XD)
